Different complex word problems require different combinations of cognitive skills

Abstract Mathematical word problem solving is influenced by various characteristics of the task and person it. Yet, previous research has rarely related these to holistically answer which requires set individual cognitive skills. In present study, we conducted a secondary data analysis on dataset N = 1282 undergraduate students six mathematical problems from Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Previous results had indicated substantial variability in contribution skills correct solution different tasks. Here, exploratively reanalyzed investigate may account this variability, considering verbal, arithmetic, spatial, general reasoning simultaneously. Results indicate that verbal were most consistent predictor successful tasks, arithmetic only predicted containing calculations, spatial rates presence visual representation, more relevant simpler could be easily solved using heuristics. We discuss possible implications, emphasizing how differ with regard required solve them correctly.
